Junior Underwriter

San Antonio, TX

Position Summary:

The Junior Underwriter is responsible for the accurate and timely data, and financial analysis of various actuarial/financial projects for pricing of Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability programs for fully insured and self-funded plans for clients while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the data collection and data entry into pricing models, and initial analysis of underwriting information by interacting with sales support staff.
  • Support throughout all phases of an account, from data gathering, initial pricing, to sold documentation and on-going account service and maintenance.
  • Obtains and provides spreadsheet quotes from multiple carriers.
  • Provides financial analysis for more complex and /or larger clients including more in-depth analysis for complex situations that require additional research or discussion with FCE subject matter experts.
  • Analyzes cost-drivers by reviewing client’s cost/utilization data and looking for year-over-year trends or comparisons to external benchmarks using data provided from client’s vendor reports or raw data from internal databases; key results are summarized and presented to client to help understand cost drivers and help modify plan design.
  • Excel® spreadsheet and projecting costs for the next plan year; analyzing vendor renewals by checking carrier or vendor’s plan rates for reasonableness and by analyzing claims and enrollment data, trend rates, administrative expenses and other charges.
  • Compares client’s current plan to alternative designs; develops employee contribution scenarios by entering current employee medical contribution data into an Excel® spreadsheet and projecting contributions to the next plan year, taking into account the cost-sharing goals of the client.
  • Manages projects from start to finish that includes managing the quality and timeliness of client deliverables; developing budgets and billing reports; acting as a client contact for financial work; preparing clear and concise client-friendly communications; presenting results to clients.

Education and Licensing:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.

Experience:

  • Previous underwriting, health insurance, or finance experience is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of underwriting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including presentation skills.
  • Excellent abilities in Microsoft Office® and Excel®.
